DANVILLE, VA – A Reidsville High School teacher has been charged with driving under the influence (DUI) for the second time.
According to the Danville, Va. Police Department, John Joseph Beckelheimer, 46, of Pittsylvania County, VA was charged on Monday afternoon after being involved in a DUI crash on the Danville Expressway (Route 29).
Beckelheimer, a science teacher, assistant football coach and drivers’ education instructor had to be airlifted to Roanoke for injuries he incurred following the incident. Another driver, who was operating a Ford, was also involved in the crash and was transported and subsequently released Danville Regional Medical Center for injuries incurred.
According to Rockingham County Schools spokesperson Karen Hyler, Beckelheimer was not working on Monday and has been suspended with pay, pending further investigation. As a result of the DUI charges, his position as a drivers’ education instructor was terminated.
This is not the first time Beckelheimer was charged with DUI. In May 2008, he was convicted of driving under the influence.
Hyler explained that Beckelheimer was hired in 2006, two years before his first Virginia DUI charge and his state and school files do not show this conviction.
